The word gets thrown around a lot but that first Jurassic Park movie is nothing short of iconic. It might be the last Old Hollywood movie ever made. Or maybe it’s the movie that kicked Old Hollywood in the pants. It was so ubiquitous that it made it to my little island of Aruba and we lined up to get into the drive in theatre, as the movie was already playing, and I was trying to hear it on the radio. The first image I remember of it as we found our parking spot was the baby velociraptor break out of its shell. Yes, we were THAT late, and I still loved it.
I don’t remember much else about that night, but I do remember that it made such an impact that I rented it as soon as it came out on video. Of course I was blown away, and now, 25 years later, I’m STILL blown away. We all are. It’s a meme generator that shows no signs of slowing down. We got Dodgson here! Clever girl! Nature finds a way! Babies smell! These phrases are embedded into our culture. Well, maybe not all of them.
Jurassic Park is one of these movies that needs to be rewatched and studied and will keep pleasing its audience of all ages for years to come. It’s still highly entertaining and has aged like fine wine. Which is shocking considering what a CGI-heavy it was for the time. I don’t know if they hit the jackpot, or got lucky, or were coded by geniuses but these special effects look as great then as they do now. Mindblowing considering Lawnmover Man and Virtuosity came out around the same time.
And that’s why it’s such a joy to know that this movie (and the entire series, actually) has gotten the 4K treatment. It treats it with the respect it deserves and wants to preserve it in the highest possible quality for generations to come. The less said about the sequels the better, but they’re included in this pack as well. But, treat them more like special features to supplement the original movie including loads of makings-of and a 6 part Return to Jurassic Park feature. But seriously, no commentary tracks? What gives!
No matter, this is a huge collection as a very modest price and honestly, might be the last time you ever buy this movie. It’s the definitive collection and belongs in every home.
