Wicked
[4K/Blu-ray/Digital Combo]

Look, there is probably no worse type of culture than musical theatre. It’s garish, gaudy, awkward and just plain unnecessary. We all know a musical nut. Are they ever the cool person in the group? Right? Enough said.

I know Wicked is a cultural phenomenon, but I couldn’t care less. I don’t dislike musicals, I just think most of them are terrible. I love Rocky Horror and Spinal Tap (yes, it’s a musical, you philistines). I never watched or listened to the Hamilton soundtrack. It just seemed to cringey for me and the bits and pieces of music I heard sounded terrible: like an elementary school teacher rapping about history. Yikes.

So, who better to review this edition of Wicked than my wicked wife, who is gaga for Belarus (or whatever her name is). She LOVES that we own this, with the sing-a-long version and had this to say:

Theatre kids, get ready to hold some space! Wicked is out on Blu-Ray. The immersive experience of watching in a dark movie theater can make the 2 hours 40 minutes go by so quickly. Even the drawn out version of the Defying Gravity finale felt urgent and climactic. Watching on the small screen can diminish the magic a bit, but they’ve added more than an hour of bonus content. Real Wicked-heads can get behind-the-scenes interviews. There’s a sing-along version to turn your next middle school cast party into an unforgettable rager. Or simply cuddle up on the couch and hold the finger of someone you love, while pondering, “What is this feeling?”

So, there you go. Frankly, I was hoping for a more impassioned speech, but a glowing review, in some ways, nonetheless. Look, physical media is where it’s at these days, and Universal gets credit for putting this out in the more elusive triple format of 4K/Blu-ray/Digital release. I like that. Would it have killed them to make one disc green and the other pink, though?

Hey! Get your Wicked on!… or something. Is that something people are saying?
