Edge of Tomorrow
[4K/Blu-ray combo]

It might be time for us to rehabilitate Tom Cruise. He’s long reigned supreme as America’s favorite weirdo actor celebrity, and it’s his own fault. Who could forget that appearance on Oprah years ago when we all realized just how strange of a bubble the man lives in. That just opened up a pandora’s box of oddness that directly relates to the shady organizations the man associates himself with. We’re a small-time website here, so we’re not going to name names and risk being targeted by outfits who’ve taken down much bigger than us. Just Google the man and prepare for a wormhole of weirdness.

So, why should we care about the walking joke that is Tom Cruise? Well, for no other reason than he makes great movies. And for proof that the man still has the stuff, you should look no further than Edge of Tomorrow (or Live Die Repeat). This movie has everything you’d want from a blockbuster: cool story, great visuals, witty banter, great action and a unique plot. Well, unique-ish, at least. As a friend of mine texted me halfway through watching this movie, “Wait, so it’s like a sci-fi Groundhog Day?”

Yes. That’s one way to put it.

But what’s also cool about Edge of Tomorrow is that it’s a cult hit, which is weird considering it made 400 million dollars at the box office. Maybe the action-movie audience wasn’t prepared to use their brains to this degree, or maybe they weren’t willing to do so for an action movie that doesn’t shift the paradigm like the Matrix did. After all these years, Edge of Tomorrow is still a remarkably fun and deep movie that does more with the genre than most action movies do these days. Part of it is the writing, and part of it is its costars.

What a great thing to have this movie appreciated in 4K format, and it’s about time. This combo pack comes with a good amount of extras, looking at the production, special effects, and background into the design of the weapons and monsters. Also, more insight into the rumors that Tom Cruise is the hardest working man in showbiz.

Edge of Tomorrow is an underappreciated gem and now’s the perfect time to check it out or for old fans to revisit it. It was awesome when it came out and still holds up, showing just how far ahead of its time it was. This is an action movie for the whole family!
