Now in their forty-forth year, seminal progressive rock band Yes brought their current tour to San Francisco last week and proved that not only has time treated them well, but that they can still deliver the trademark songs that made them a staple of rock radio.
Walking out onto stage to "The Firebird Suite," with a video montage of classic band photos behind them,Yes took a look at the sold out crowd in front of them and kicked off the show with "Yours Is No Disgrace," from The Yes Album. The band is performing the album (along with Close To The Edge and Going For The One) in it's entirety on this tour, which meant that both "Clap" and "Starship Trooper" were to follow. "Disgrace" sounded great, with Steve Howe laying down his signature guitar sound. Longtime members Chris Squire (bass), Alan White (drums), and Geoff Downes (keyboards) filled out the classic Yes sound with their stellar musicianship, while vocalist Jon Davison kept true to the songs, while still having a style and presence of his own.
After completing The Yes Album, the band next went into Close to the Edge, highlighted by a great rendition of "And You and I." Going for the One followed, and that set included "Turn of the Century" and "Wonderous Stories," both done quite spectacularly. For an encore, the band returned to the stage for 'Roundabout' which no Yes show would be complete without.
Time has been good to Yes, and fans are in for a great show on this tour, certainly.
