Six Finger Satellite
Severe Exposure
Deluxe & Expanded Edition

Trust no one when it comes to music. Well, trust your sources. I mean, trust sources who’ve been a good guide to you in the past. So, I guess what I’m trying to say is, you CAN trust people when it comes to music. But, be cautious. There’s nothing worse than following the advice of people who know almost nothing about music. Like, you know Geese? That album they put out last year was good. I really enjoyed it. I still do. BUT, if the New Yorker is praising it, if people are claiming it’s the new direction of rock music, if they’re playing SNL, every red flag should be going up. Something clearly is wrong and people are woefully misinformed.

Look to writers and zines you trust. Look to artists you trust as well. How do you know what your favorite artist is digging? One way is through the What’s in My Bag show by Amoeba Records. I don’t watch it that often but I was on a METZ kick some years ago and, doing some digging online took me to their What’s in My Bag episode. It was old, shot during covid times, but one of their recommendations was Six Finger Satellite. I heard 3 seconds of this record and knew I had to hear it.

What does it sound like? Well, it sounds like a gazelle, trapped in a room full of expensive antiques, desperate to get out. Also, it doesn’t know how to get out, but it sure as fuck knows it’s going to do it. Another great description is that it’s a buzzy, choppy, hooky, shouty, frantic pop punk record. You know, the good kind.

A funny thing about that What’s in My Bag segment is that the bass player said he keeps begging Sup Pop to reissue it, but they haven’t yet.

Well, GUESS what happened!

It’s a great thing for the world that this album is more widely available now and getting another chance, because it’s good stuff. Very good stuff. This deluxe edition also has been expanded with “17 additional songs, including rare singles, compilation tracks, and unreleased material” and comes housed in a cool gatefold sleeve on orange and silver vinyl.

Look, I can’t make you listen to Severe Exposure but you really should. And if you don’t like it, you need to reassess your priorities, so just put it on your rotation, OK? TRUST ME.

Get it from Sub Pop.
