A deeper look at the grooves pressed into the vinyl reissue of the Twin Peaks Original Soundtrack.

The current rage of soundtracks on vinyl has definitely contributed to the fun of collecting vinyl. Although there are a lot of companies putting out extraordinary releases, the king of the crop currently has to be the good folks over at Mondo. The attention to detail is simply top notch, with releases that serve to charm in both sound and visuals; absolutely kickass music with original eye-catching artwork.

We’ve been dying to do a Mondo release for a while, and we’re absolutely thrilled our debut with these guys is the Twin Peaks soundtrack.

Twin Peaks can be a difficult show to process. It took me a couple episodes to realize that I’m watching a cheesy soap opera in the hands of a film genius. As the series’ storyline spirals out of control, we’re taken on an emotional journey in every sense of the term. This show runs on three things: its characters, its setting, and its music. Oh yes, and this is a straight-up doozy of a soundtrack. It takes just a couple of episodes of Twin Peaks to recognize what a role the music plays: each character has their theme and the scenes are grounded in the Twin Peaks world with its own particular moody and creepy melody. Angelo Badalamenti has composed music that sounds both corny and fresh, and that’s what this show is about.

Of course Mondo/Death Waltz simply puts together a package that is a joy to experience. Not satisfied with just rehashing the old artwork, they’ve redesigned the artwork for the soundtrack (headed by Sam Smith) with the trademark Twin Peaks zig zags die cut into the blue pine tree sleeves. The record itself is in a gatefold featuring notes by Badalamenti and comes in 180gram coffee colored vinyl. If you love the show, all of that will put a smile on your face.

Mondo doesn’t just raise the bar with this release, they do it right. [OLLIE OTTOMAN]
