Dog Man
[Blu-ray/Digital Code]
All hail Dog Man! Look, with a 5-year-old, there aren’t a lot of movies we can watch and enjoy together, and I was skeptical of Dog Man (more on that later), but boy did it deliver. What helps Dog Man in this situation is being self-aware of what it is and what it’s trying to accomplish. It looks great (if you like that kind of animation…which I do), it’s got an interesting story, which is great, but what it succeeds at most is momentum. Dog Man is incredibly punchy and a veritable machine gun of jokes aimed at both adults and kids. Whether it’s commenting on the absurdity of its plot, or its own characters, or its own story, this movie seems focused on making us laugh while racing through the plot. All this is a perfect mix for a dynamic movie that’s entertaining for the whole family. My kid even wanted to watch it on several occasion and I looked forward to rewatching it with him. That’s high praise! It’s just THAT FUNNY.
Dog Man looked great when I saw previews in the theatres but there was simply no way I was going to take my kid to watch it. Not because he can’t handle movie theatres, but because the movie has Pete Davidson in it. I just can’t think of anyone right now who is more untalented and has had more success handed to him undeservedly than this man. You don’t have to believe me. You should believe HIM. HE ADMITS IT HIMSELF. We live in a time where we can make our own decisions on what we media we consume. We have many options, so why would we willingly support mediocrity?
But!
The most shocking thing about Dog Man is that Pete Davidson is actually good in it, and I mean REALLY good. Maybe he finally found something he’s good at. His portrayal of Petey the cat is maybe the highlight of a movie full of highlights (including the other voice actors). It’s sentimental, complex, and incredibly funny. Intentionally so. It’s probably due to the voice directing, but whatever the case may be, this is another reason to be impressed with Dog Man.
I’m hoping there will be more movies in the future. With such a talented team at the helm, I’m excited to see where they’ll take us next and the laughs they’ll bring along the way. Dog Man is all killer, no filler!
