The Ergs!/Boris the Sprinkler/Egghead
Live @ Crystal Ballroom
Somerville, MA [07/18/24]
One of the funnest tours of 2024 might be over, but it’s never too late to find out about it. Huh, I should work on my intros more. But why didn’t I write about the Egghead/Boris the Sprinkler/Ergs! East Coast tour before? Because, hindsight makes fools of us all. But, I’m no fool. This one was special, and if you were there (or WANTED to be there) you know what I’m talking about.
The Ergs! are turning into a legacy band. They’re responsible for some of the funnest, hardest, coolest pop punk songs of all time. They still play shows, but in their stubbornness refuse to put out a new record. Like, a proper record. Why? Maybe their hearts aren’t into it. For this band, that’s important, because Ergs! songs are all about heart, and Mikey Erg is one of the nicest guys around, and a busy man at that.
The Ergs! love Boston, so it makes sense they’re starting the celebration of the 20th Anniversary of their debut Dorkrockcorkrod here in the city. I promise you that sentence makes sense. Of course I was going to be there, but what I didn’t appreciate was that the openers were a big deal as well: beloved veterans making a comeback of sorts. I was able to catch the end of Egghead’s set and regretted not being more prepared for their music. The following band Boris the Sprinkler caught me by surprise with their wild stage antics, Rev Norb’s endless comments, and their catchy Ramones-esque tunes. Both these bands I should be, and will be, better acquainted with.
Then of course, the headliners. I was at the previous Ergs! reunion show at Great Scott (RIP!) and was looking forward for this do-over. I even saw some familiar faces in the crowd. Dorkrockcorkrod was performed flawlessly in its entirety, with the crowd singing along to every word (I made the live show my chance to get reacquainted with these songs). It was good music, a good crowd, a good venue, and good vibes all around, man. It’s clear from this show that there’s a lot of love for this band so many years after they “broke up.”
Come on, guys. It’s time to record a new record. I know this old dog is still full of tricks. You’re older and wiser, and so are we. We’re all rooting for you. Bring it!
