You know those bands that you forget you’re in love with? The Bronx is most certainly one of those. I don’t know why it is that I never think of them anymore when I scroll my iPod, because “False Alarm” is arguably the perfect rock song. Maybe it’s because we think of them more as “that Mariachi band with punks in it” nowadays, I’m not quite sure. But what I do know is that the chance to see such a furious band at a late night show in a tiny venue in Cambridge was definitely not something I was going to miss. Here are three reasons to see The Bronx live.

  1. The Bronx are one of those bands that we are proud to call a punk band. Mainly because The Bronx play a kind of punk rock no one else is doing these days. For a variety of reasons, whether it’s the schizophrenic song themes, the outstanding instrumentation, or the grating vocals, the Bronx are a punk band for the masses that just don’t get them. That alone makes it imperative that you see them live.
  2. The guys are playing a set of free shows across the country. Like I said: in tiny venues, and all 21+. This is the perfect setting to see this band, like controlled chaos or watching a dirty bomb go off in your backyard. And what you will get is 100 per cent delivery from every single member on that front, and especially from a front man who is easily also a mad man.
  3. Like lead singer Matt Caughthran said, “we’ve been doing the mariachi thing for a while and it’s good to be doing this again.” This is true in so many ways. Mariachi El Bronx seems like a side project (although a well-executed one). The Bronx is the real deal and, what’s more, it seems the boys are ready to put out an album next year – so these shows serve as a preview for the material. A tear comes to my eye. Music might still be saved.

The Bronx are currently on tour as both themselves and their alter ego Mariachi El Bronx.
