WHAT: Greatest Hates Vol. 2
WHY: A silly concept album that has no business being this good. Because casual searches online can’t seem to shed any light on whether there’s anything special about this product, I’m comfortable saying Liquid Death is just water. Canned water that looks punk rock. As Liquid Death’s website itself says, it’s completely unnecessary. And so, Twitter has a lot of opinions on why this a dumb product. That was expected. What was not expected was that Liquid Death would commission music based on these tweets, that the second volume would involve such heavy hitters as Alkaline Trio, The Bombpops, and the Lawrence Arms, or that the songs would turn out this catchy and good. That’s triply outrageous! Greatest Hates is simply a fun punk record that is greater than the sum of its parts. It’s not for everybody, sure, but there’s no denying that this will scratch an itch that many of us have. For those of you who “get it,” this record will impress and find itself in your standard music rotation.
