Matt Costa has played all over the world to huge crowds. He's been mobbed in airports and had fans who don't speak English sing along word for word. Yet to launch his new record Unfamiliar Faces, Costa headed back home to Southern California to rest, relax and play a few in-stores—you know, a laid-back intimate setting for his hometown fans. Ground Control caught up with him at Encinitas' famed Lou's Records, where a line of kids who bought his album just a few days before were lined up down the block, waiting to hear him sing.

Just prior to the show, Costa took some time to talk about the new record, new instruments and the reason why his album (originally scheduled for release in October '07) hit the streets in the wintertime. Then he ducked away to play a short acoustic set in the back office at Lou's before the big, full band set. Ground Control was lucky enough to tag along, and with that, we proudly present Lunarcast number eight.
