I wasn’t sure what to expect for my first session at the Roxy in Hollywood. To go to a place where some legendary people have played is always fun for me. Of course the dark-dungeonous feel of the inside, with black and white portraits of legendary artists was exactly what I was expecting. This place is on the same road as the Key Club and The Viper Room. To expect anything else would be quite a peculiar thought. LMFAO’s record release party was the event and we had no idea who was to be on stage before them. All we knew was the event started at 8pm and they got on stage at 11:30pm. We arrived a little past eight to a DJ who had the name of “Jason Smith” on the front of the laptop. I asked around but I couldn’t really get a definitive answer as to how long the young chap had been spinning or how on earth he made it on stage.

I don’t want you to think that Jason wasn’t worthy of being on stage. He had an amazing mixability within his expertise that was a one off and rare to hear. When anyone takes tracks like Robin S’ “Show Me Love” over a dark jungle beat you’ve got something going for you. Jason was definitely a crowd starter and knows how to start from a dead stop and transition into a good beginning groove. Once 10:30 rolled around, DJ Splice jumped on the decks and started to spin.

DJ Splice played your favorite song during his session on stage. Yes, you read that right. He played every chart topper I could possibly think of. Now this is where the conversation starts off, is LMFAO electronic music or hip-hop? Half of the songs played were electronic, and half were hip-hop. Both pleased the crowd equally, and everyone loved the out-of-category tracks from artists like Kings of Leon or Tegan and Sara. Honestly, it truly felt like the best high school prom DJ possible. This mentality fit the crowd perfectly as it was mostly younger. The venue is intimate in its size, making it perfect for LMFAO’s record release party, that was announced as the twelfth highest sold album overall on iTunes on 7/7/09 (the release date and the date of the show). When the DJ stopped spinning the stage was only prepped for a short moment before Eric Delux presented LMFAO to the crowd. The first song they played was the intro track for their album, "Rock the BeaT." The duo, Sky Blu and Red Foo, have one of the most unique stories for their band name. When they told their grandmother their original thought of “Sexy Dudes” digitally, Grandma Goodfoot’s reply was simply, “LMFAO.”

LMFAO is not a quite group, they were not the group that you see go on stage, sing songs and then walk off. Their youthfulness as a band was only shown in how eager and happy they were to have the opportunity to be on stage in the first place. Their performance was something that only very seasoned artists usually pull off. The extra effort, the dancer in the polka-dot-bikini, the actual hipster girl that inspired “Lil’ Hipster Girl” and champagne flying over the crowd were just a few things that I’m usually not being sprinkled with from every concert I go to.

The band’s ability to produce music that is simplistic and catchy made it fantastically easy for the crowd to sing along to. This is the crowd that was at a record release party for the first album  from LMFAO. Watching them sing along to “La La La” and “I Am Not a Whore” was amazing. I found it to be quite amazing when they decided to play the first part of “Thriller” in dedication to Michael Jackson (his burial was the same day as the show) the crowd was able to sing along to only the first part of the chorus and then sharply fell off. Lucky for the crowd and the band they were quick to go to the next track and pick up as if it didn’t happen. LMFAO went through their entire album plus an the additional track of “Paranoid” which is a Kanye West remix produced by Goon Rock, the producer for all of the tracks on their Party Rock album. LMFAO is set to rise faster than any new group I have seen recently. I have high hopes for more amazing concerts and albums in the future.
