LIVE MUSIC

“SOLE! SOLE! SOLE!”

“HAT! HAT! HAT!”

“PUP! PUP! PUP!”

I can’t believe I get to go to the punk guitarist who went on the Doughboys Podcast’s band’s show! Just kidding. I’ve been listening to PUP for years now, and have been finding that, as I age, I appreciate their music more. Their new album Who Will Look After the Dogs will probably break our Top 10 of the year. Jeff Rosenstock is a no brainer. He was once the best pop-punk musician out there getting it done, you know? Although they both now fall under the loud-sing-talk umbrella, they’re still putting out awesome-sounding cool music. And, now you’re telling me they’re on the SAME BILL!? Where do I sign up!

Apparently, at the Roadrunner in Boston on a Monday night. Did I mention it’s a Monday night, because the place was fucking PACKED. PACKED FOR A MONDAY NIGHT! We have work/school tomorrow! I was always a little bored with Rosenstock’s simplistic and preaching-to-the-choir politics and social perspective (“Everything is terrible! Bad people are bad!”), but you gotta admit, there’s a cool feeling when you walk into a Rosenstock show. Just good vibes all around, you know? I’ve always wondered how it’s possible to look so uncool and make the coolest music. The guy looks like shit! Rosenstock’s band is really top tier, he’s a beast on guitar, and he’s got one of the greatest drummers in punk rock today. Rosenstock and PUP shared setlist length, but it’s clear that in this situation, PUP was gonna have a big impact on attendance. They’re simply HUGE. The Roadrunner is HUGE and, like I said, it was almost packed. It takes Doughboys-level popularity to achieve that turnout. PUP’s set itself was remarkably similar to Rosenstock’s in the good vibes and loudness. Their albums have always sounded great, and their fantastic drummer is always a highlight. Live he’s even more incredible. God, punk rock drummers should be envy of musicians all around.

This night had it all: great bands, great performances, great setlists, and a happy crowd. A great combination like this is a rarity. I’m going to go ahead and say it: the Jeff Rosenstock/PUP tour is the fee-good tour of 2025 and probably 2026 as well. Nothing will come close for quite a while. Now’s your chance! What are you waiting for!? Stop reading this!
