The Story of My Tits
by Jennifer Hayden

It’s hard to pinpoint what exactly makes Jennifer Hayden’s book The Story of my Tits so beautiful. Perhaps it’s the art itself which is childlike and charming, perhaps it’s the fact that she managed to fit so much story into this book, or perhaps it’s the fact that Hayden here expertly delivers a personal and relatable story arching her entire life (so far). Perhaps it’s all of these things.

The Story of My Tits is the kind of story that yet again delivers the point that superhero mainstream comics pale in comparison to what an artist-driven personal book can accomplish. Supernatural and silly adversaries aside, Hayden’s fears and foes are all too real in this book. Starting from her childhood, Hayden has wanted one thing more than anything in her life, and that’s boobs. But as she grows older experiences life, loss, and heartbreak, she starts to realize that these boobs might also be a death sentence. In the meantime, she’s trying to hold a job, a relationship, and make sense of hers and partner’s family. Hayden’s life has definitely thrown her curveballs and she may not handle them like a pro, but she does it in a very real way.

As I’ve said before, there’s quite a bit of story to tell here which is why it took me so long to finish this book. Don’t be fooled by the “childlike” art and 4-panel pages. The Story of My Tits has a lot to unpack and the more you invest, the more you get out of it. It’s a story about reaching adulthood whether we’d like to or not, and all the unpleasantries that involves. Hayden has put together a story that casts a wide net, that all will appreciate, and many will love.
