?Nowhere Men goes like this: imagine a world where science catches the world’s imagination so that it truly becomes pop culture as we now experience it. And I mean pop culture in the vainest way possible; with its own rock stars, “coolness” lists, social media attention, celebrity beefs and superfans. We even get a glimpse of the counter-culture DIY aspect which pops up when the general public waters down any art form. In other words this world lives within the view that “science is the new rock n roll,” and getting caught up in all this is a group of scientists on a space station who have unfortunately been exposed to some sort of virus which makes them go through “changes” to say the least. Being kept a secret from the general public might have had some beneficial purpose initially but, as we soon learn, there might have been some more sinister powers at play.
I truly have to give it up to writer Eric Stephenson who has the guts to take on something so ambitious and original, and just jam packed with content. The book’s continuity and pacing shirt regularly from standard storytelling to news articles and interviews which fill us in on back story. Well, maybe it’s because he’s got Fonografiks on pencils and Jordie Bellaire which are absolute masters at their craft and make his work look so good. And to tie it all together, Nowhere Men is published by an independent company. Could you ask for anything more?
