LIVE MUSIC

Seeing a good opener can be a cathartic experience. Sometimes it’s interesting, and you check them out when you go home, but most of the time it’s forgettable. I can count on one hand when an opener has blown me away, and I don’t even need all my fingers.

When I caught the last few songs of Die Spitz at an OFF! show years ago all I could think of is how loud it sounded. Then, watching them put their gear away I was intrigued by how these people could put on such a rowdy show. After checking them out, it was kind of a no brainer that their album (EP?) Teeth is something that should be in my rotation. This band was was getting a lot of buzz and we made sure you weren’t missing out. It was #2 of our best-of-2023 list, ONLY BECAUSE IT WAS SO SHORT. But Teeth is a great album and Die Spitz are clearly a great live band. I wanted to catch them live the next time they came to town but I was in the hospital when that happened. Go figure. Also, they were opening for Amyl and the Sniffers: a band whose shtick is wearing thin.

Then, they headlined a stinky club in Boston? This is my kind of show. It turns out that tour was a showcase of sorts. They made the rounds and got the attention of the right people, including Jack White. It was great news to hear Die Spitz had signed to Third Man and that they would be working with Will Yip on their “proper” debut LP. Something to Consume was not what I was expecting from the band. But what do I know? I’m a fan. Fans don’t know shit. What’s important for a band is that they’re given the artistic freedom to do what they want. I’m still reckoning with the results. Is this a little too much into nu-metal territory? It’s so metal and so screamo and so effervescent at the same time. Wailing choruses when you’re not dying by the sword. But you can’t stop these ladies. They’re focused and are here to do the work. You gotta admire that. After supporting Viagra Boys they’re BACK OUT THERE headlining another tour.

Die Spitz are goofballs with playing chops. We heard all the songs from the new EP, which rocked hard live, and my favorites from Teeth which rocked even harder. All the Die Spitz antics were on display on this night, with the theme being pajamas and singer Ellie Livingston climbing whatever structure this space would allow. Something to Consume is short and we got almost all the songs from that album as well.

It’s clear this band are leaving it all on the stage in this tour, but also happen to be the THE band to see live right now. Those small club shows might never again. Die Spitz is shooting for the stars.
