Broken Social Scene's got a bastard bun in the oven. Deciding to expand the (metaphorical) family the old fashioned way, co-founder and lead singer Kevin Drew will be the first to slap his name on the new line of quasi-solo albums, the Broken Social Scene Presents series.

Spirit If… was recorded over the past two years at the home of fellow BSSer Ohad Benchetrit, and was produced by Benchetrit, Drew and Charles Spearin. It features contributions from "the social scene community" who "played key supporting roles" in the creation of the record. Brendan Canning is currently at work on the second disc in the series.

For those of you that are confused, think of it this way: It's like that episode of LOST where Hurley finds the VW bus. It didn't follow the main plot threat at the time, but it was still an episode of LOST, and involved a lot of the same characters. Except Kevin Drew is more like Jack. That would make Brendan Canning Locke, and Leslie Feist (or the girl with the giant hair) Kate. And everyone would be Charlie.

Broken Social Scene Presents Kevin Drew: Spirit If… is out September 18th on Arts & Crafts.
