Am I gonna get beat up if I say that I like Bob Mould’s solo stuff more than Husker Du? Of course, I really like Husker Du, but they’re one of those “reckoning” bands for me. As much as I listen to them, I just can’t seem to get a grip on their music. Every time I put them on, it’s enjoyable, but it just doesn’t stick. It’s almost purposefully uncatchy. Except of course for “Makes No Sense At all.”
But Mould is back with another banger “Here We Go Crazy,” a clear, crisp and polished album that pays off the more you listen to it. The band has become a supergroup of sorts with Jason Narducy and Jon Wurster in the rhythm section, and you know what, I’m always up for a night of Dad Rock, so it’s quite a privilege to be packed liked sardines in the Paradise Rock club on a Friday night.
Packed we were, with an understandably older demographic. The Paradise has this weird layout where it’s wider than it is deep, so chances are, you’re seeing the band from the side in most cases. I could only elbow my way to the front so much until I was stuck behind one of the main floor pillars. This meant I couldn’t see Mould unless I leaned way over, but you know what, I had a clear view of Narducy and especially Wurster who I was very happy to watch. The man is such a powerhouse and brings a pounding edge to all the songs. He’s also a blast to watch and his energy is infectious.
We got lots of tracks from Here We Go Crazy (like my favorite Hard to Get) as well as the back catalog, and of course, lots of Husker Du songs like Flip Your Wig, Something I Learned Today, and Makes No Sense at All.
It was 27 songs in a blistering 2 hour performance. The Bob Mould Band is in top form and, from what it seems, have become even more cohesive over the years. It’s hard not to have fun when a band is playing so well and putting out positive vibes. Musically, Mould seems to be unstoppable, and both in the studio and on stage, the band is still on top of their game. They get a Husker DO, if you ask me.
