I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, labels need to embrace the free mp3 download revolution. Barsuk Records, from Seattle, WA, are embracing it like a mofo. We’ve been in touch with them a lot lately, covering artists like Rocky Votolato, John Vanderslice, Menomena and What Made Milwaukee Famous, and when we’re looking for a song to post, good ol’ Barsuk is like, “Here you go, have a song on the house!” I think they understand that most indie bands are heard by a few thousand people, and if that one track leaks to the right crowd, it’s a good thing for exposure, not “lost sales” or some bullshit. So, thank you Barsuk, for allowing music fans to explore your catalog the right—and modern—way.
