What makes great music? Tough question, I know. So maybe it's better to ask, "Why do we listen to music?" What does music have to offer?
Well, that is going to vary from person to person, but I think most people can agree that good music does something to you. It changes your mood. It takes you from point A to point B. It has the power to liberate you. It empowers. In order to do that, one first must relate to music and, in order for that to happen, music must be knocked off of its pedestal and be made accessible.
This is what I expect from good music. It speaks to you, you relate, you want to turn it up, and you think to yourself, "This artist is me. I can do this."
This is the undeniable power of punk rock and garage rock.
So, what does this have to do with Ty Segall's singles collection? Well, this record is quite possibly the embodiment of just how accessible music can be. On Singles 2007-2010 are twenty-five raw, rocking, and personal songs spanning Ty's early career as a solo artist. Ty is simply a machine of garage music. In his short career, he has been incredibly prolific (these songs span only four years!) and his music has kept the integrity of someone who has a simple goal in life: making music.
Singles 2007-10 is an important album to own because it embodies what can be done with pure desire; you don't have to be the best at your instrument, you don't need a full band, you don't need a fancy studio setup, you don't need fancy artwork, you don't need to put out full albums. All you need is the drive and desire to just make music, and Ty Segall proves that here on this comp.
The Singles 2007-2010 double LP is a vital item for any music collector. And you should do it on vinyl.
