BitTorrent Inc., a leading innovator creating advanced technologies to efficiently move large files across the Internet, today announced that Sick of Sarah’s album 2205 has been downloaded over one million times since launch on February 15, according to trackers set up to monitor the album’s proliferation through the BitTorrent community.
As of 5 p.m. March 15 (last night), the ClearBits.net trackers had registered 1,365,453 completed downloads of the album.
The announcement comes as Sick of Sarah prepares to take the stage tomorrow night at SXSW. The band will perform at Cedar Street Courtyard at 8:30 p.m.
“Our success on the BitTorrent platform has been overwhelming,” said Jamie Holm, Sick of Sarah’s bassist. “This technology and audience aren’t only the future, they’re here today. We welcome all the new fans and hope our experiments with online distribution and fan engagement open up new doors for other artists.”
“We congratulate Sick of Sarah for blowing past such an impressive milestone. Our audience loved 2205, and we admire their attitude and support of the BitTorrent community,” said Shahi Ghanem, chief strategist at BitTorrent.
The album was released directly to the BitTorrent community and promoted on BitTorrent.com and µTorrent.com homepages; offered to new users during the installation of the BitTorrent Mainline and uTorrent software; and offered for free download in the company’s new App Studio.
The free app features the album download with ten songs plus liner notes, tour dates, and links to the band’s social media properties to empower the band to build relationships with fans for long-term success. While the album is free, BitTorrent encourages fans to show their support for Sick of Sarah’s efforts via donations, Facebook and Twitter.
The 2205 album is infused with dirty guitars, heavy drum beats, all strung up by lyrics that beat away all “chick-rock” clichés. Sick of Sarah has been described by critics as the next big girl band, and the album has been lauded by some of the godmothers of rock music, including Nancy Wilson of Heart and Susanna Hoffs of The Bangles – both of whom took Sick of Sarah on the road in 2010.
BitTorrent first launched the App Studio last August. Other notable artist-endorsed spotlight releases have included The Yes Men Fix the World, Four Eyed Monsters, PAZ, Beyond the Game, and Pioneer One. The new thriller film Zenith debuted this morning.
