Hey – where ya been junkie?
I dunno about you, but I always get a kick outta cover songs. I dunno why, but I always think it's cool to hear when some musician decides to show where he came from or what got his attention as a kid by raiding their books and knocking out a new take on old tunes. Sometimes it's funny and sometimes it's awful, but sometimes the band doing the covering actually does a better job than the original auteurs! Well, that's what I think anyway which is another cool thing about cover tunes: they're instant conversation starters like, “Can you believe this band did'is? What were they thinkin'?!” Sometimes they're better than the originals too; like I happen to like Blind Melon's versions of “The Pusher” and “John Sinclaire” better than the ones that Steppenwolf and John Lennon did, but that's jus' me an' I always get into an argument when I say that.
It's all about personal taste – you know?
What am I talkin' about? Well, all'at came to mind this week on account o' because, in addition to your weekly fix o'SWAG, I happen to run across a whole bunch o' cover songs done by all different flavors o' band. What I got'ere is a little more exotic than your run-'o'-the-mill cover set, this was a case o' tellin' a musician to do dis song that's totally against their grain jus'ta see how it turns out. Some of them are pretty killer, and some of 'em suck – to my ears – but yer choices might be different from mine so check 'em out already, and getcha fix!
Yer ever lovin' Don Loder.
