Better late than never. This applies to this review and to the Marked Men. The Marked Men came into my life 20 years ago and my love for them remains to this day. They haven’t even released new music in 18 years and probably will never release a new full length. They sent their ripples and are now a legacy band by choice. All their members are still active in other bands, but they just refuse to put out new music together. They don’t play much, but sure enough, when their friends Poison Ruin asked them to play a show with them in Philly, they did us all a favor and asked “Why don’t we just play more shows around the area?” Do people care? Well, the show in Medford sold out almost instantly. EVERYONE is looking forward to seeing the Marked Men live.
I’ve never been to Deep Cuts in Medford, but I get Great Scott vibes from them, and that’s a high compliment. Sweetening the pot is that pop punk magician Colleen Green was opening. Her set was short and sweet and included no songs from her wonderful last album Cool. Maybe she’s warming up these songs for a new album.
The Marked Men took the stage and proceeded to fire through what seems like 20 or so songs in an hour or less. The set included equal cuts from all their albums and even some rarities (like Too Pretty to Fuck). The songs are blistering, scorching, and urgent, and I feel for their drummer who has so somehow keep up with them on a 4/4/ beat. Thank God there are slower songs in there for him to get his bearings. With the set over before 10 PM, the band hung out and chatted with anyone who approaches them, including me. The Marked Men are nice men.
Like I said, we’re probably never getting a new album from these guys, and it seems like they wanted to go out on top. It’s a sad thing, because even live they’re on top of their game. See the Marked Men live. See them and weep!
