In 1984, 19-year-old Darryl Hunt was accused of the rape and murder of newspaper reporter Deborah Sykes in Winston-Salem, NC. Hunt, who is black, was sentenced to life in prison for the crimes committed against Sykes, who is white, by an all-white jury. In 1994, DNA testing cleared Hunt, but he remained incarcerated for ten more years before finally being released in 2004, after serving 19.5 years for a crime he didn't commit.
The tragic story was the subject of The Trials of Darryl Hunt, a 2006 Sundance Film Festival documentary selection. That documentary's soundtrack features contributions from indie darlings in both the rock and rap camps. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, M. Ward, Dalek, Dead Prez, Mark Kozelek (of Red House Painters), Andrew Bird and more offer up tunes for the film, which is scored by Paul Brill. Check out the trailer below for more details about Darryl Hunt. All net proceeds from the sale of this soundtrack–released August 7th–will be donated to the Darryl Hunt Foundation, which works to protect wrongly convicted individuals (www.darrylhuntproject.org).
