It’s so good, right? If you appreciate good movies, this one should become a mainstay in your quoting catalog. If you’re like me, your whole life might change. I don’t think anyone can really prepare themselves for just what this movie has to offer. Scott Pilgrim (those in the know, call it that) is unlike anything we’ve ever seen. It’s peak storytelling, coming-of-age, action, comedy and music, all in one movie. It’s also peak casting, editing, special effects, and directing. I could go on. There’s so much to unpack that repeated viewing is almost required. I’ve seen it over 20 times and I still discover new things every time I watch it. The movie is just layered like an onion, and don’t get me started on the music.
Scott Pilgrim the movie rocks, so of course, the music for it is also going to rock. The soundtrack to Scott Pilgrim is something that actually is worth listening to because it’s just much better than most other movies. For starters, all the bands in this movie have had original music written and recorded, and in some cases, performed by the band themselves, just for their sequences. Upping the ante is that the songs are perfectly crafted for each band’s style and, bafflingly, they’re all very good songs. The Scott Pilgrim soundtrack has original punk, garage, new wave, EDM, and Bollywood, written by some heavy hitters like Beck, Broken Social Scene, and Metric. There are also classic tracks by the Rolling Stones and T Rex, as well as more modern tracks by Beck (a full version of Ramona), Frank Black and the Black Lips. This is a perfect awesome compliment for an awesome movie and is, quite honestly, one of the few soundtracks worth listening to.
Because the movie was underappreciated when it came out (movie-going audiences are dumb), the original vinyl soundtrack on red vinyl came and went and quietly went out of print as only true fans were able to appreciate it. Now, ABKCO has rereleased the soundtrack on Blue vinyl (commemorating Ramona’s hair color) in all its original glory. Look, this soundtrack should be enjoyed in any format possible, but if you want to make an effort, the vinyl is definitely the way to go. There’s nothing new this version adds to the original release, and that’s fine, because you don’t mess with perfection. Grab this record if you know what’s good for you, and here’s hoping for the next reissue on green vinyl.
